RS-Tyrer

Background

Tyrers buses and coaches are a familiar sight around Manchester, Bolton, Preston, Wigan, Blackburn and the rest of Lancashire. RS Tyrer provides coach hire services for excursions, holidays, short breaks and tours, and also offers private hire. Established over 40 years ago, the company moved to its current site in Farnworth in 2016.

Proposition

Miller Goodall was appointed to complete a detailed assessment of the impact of the company’s coach operations on local air quality at and close to their site to inform a planning application for the site. The assessment focussed on the impact of the vehicles on existing receptors close to the site and the nearby air quality management area.

Investigation

Baseline data was gathered in relation to air quality around the site, including monitoring carried out by the local authority. We then completed computer modelling of the impact of the vehicles associated with the site, specifically changes in airborne concentrations of particular pollutants brought about by vehicle movements. The model required the use of complex data such as traffic flow, composition and speed, and meteorological data. The information produced by the model was then used to determine the effect of the project on air quality in relation to relevant Air Quality Objectives.

Action and outcome

The assessment showed that the coach operation would not have a significant impact on local air quality. Planning permission was subsequently granted, subject to conditions.
