Radclyffe Park Primary Care Trust (PCT) is a new two-storey health centre located on Trafford Road, Ordsall. It forms part of the £50 million Radclyffe Park development, a new commercial centre in Ordsall that includes residential apartments, a high street, shops, a primary school and a hotel, all in a parkside setting. The PCT building houses doctors’ surgeries, consultation rooms and a dental practice.
The development is located on the busy Trafford Road, so noise ingress into the building needed to be controlled to appropriate levels. The developers, LPC Living, appointed Miller Goodall to undertake a full design review in relation to acoustics to enable the credits under BREEAM Healthcare 2008 and the performance requirements of HTM 08-01 - Acoustics to be met.
After carrying out noise measurements, we provided specifications for the building envelope construction materials and the internal wall, floor and door constructions necessary to achieve the required sound insulation and privacy criteria. The client’s original preference for plasterboard ceilings to all consultation and treatment rooms would have resulted in excessive reverberation and the forfeit of a valuable BREEAM credit. To avoid this, we advised the client on selection of a suitable ceiling tile, with which it was possible to achieve the required acoustic absorption while also meeting appropriate infection control parameters.
Miller Goodall also developed comprehensive noise and vibration specifications for the plant serving the building, including air handling units (AHUs), extract fans and cooling condensers. This was particularly important not only for the comfort of occupants and visitors to the PCT building, but also because of the close proximity of new residential apartments adjacent to the rooftop plant.
The specifications we supplied ensured that final commissioning testing demonstrated compliance both with BREEAM criteria and the Local Authority’s planning conditions relating to noise.
